The Daisy Mountain Fire Department is located in the north valley just north of Phoenix, Arizona. The Daisy Mountain Fire District covers approximately 200 square miles, encompassing the communities of New River, Desert Hills, Anthem, and Black Canyon City.
Each DMFM engine/ladder company is staffed with two paramedics and two EMT's.
Firefighters bring all of their tools with them when they respond to an emergency. They always have to be prepared to respond to another emergency and may be sent to a fire on their way back from a medical emergency. Fire trucks in the Valley carry fire fighting and emergency medical equipment. The firefighters who ride the fire truck are trained to fight fires and provide medical treatment.
DMFM crews work a 48/96 shift schedule, this means crews will work 48 hours on duty and then are off duty for 96 hours. Many firefighters consider their firehouse a home away from home. Firefighters work together, train together, live together, and shop together. Much like a family, a fire crew will cook and eat meals together. Each day the crews will come up with a plan for meals throughout their shift, and then head to the nearest grocery store to shop. Each member of the crew will "buy in" typically an average of $5 per meal to cover the cost of food. Cooking around the firehouse, is always an eventful experience and is a great time for crews to bond. Firefighters take great pride in their cooking skills, and each crew member takes their turn in the kitchen.
